Killing Julius Jones is Murder

The execution of Julius Jones that is scheduled to occur at 4:00 p.m. today will be an act of murder.

The execution of a likely innocent person is murder.

The execution of a person for whom the State Pardon and Parole Board has twice recommended to have the death penalty rescinded is murder.

The execution of Julius Jones by Governor Stitt who has the power to grant clemency for Julius Jones at any time will be an act of murder, and Governor Stitt will forever be a murderer.

The execution of Julius Jones will be a murder by each and every correctional officer who participates in the execution. The pathetic excuse of following orders is not exculpatory. They should all resign this morning instead of participating in this murder.

The execution of Julius Jones will be a murder by every person on the team who is tasked with administering the state’s tortuous cocktail of cruel suffering and death. The excuse of “I am just doing my job” will not make the act any less of a murder nor make those who commit it any less of a murderer. They should all resign this morning rather than being directly involved in the murder of a likely innocent person.

Every politician who has been silent about the injustice of this execution, including the mayor of Oklahoma City, the city in which Julius Jones is a citizen, will be complicit in murder. Silence is complicity. Silence is betrayal.

Every minister and every person who claims to follow Jesus, one who was unjustly executed and thus murdered by Rome, who has not worked in some way to keep Julius Jones from being unjustly executed will be complicit in a murder.

Every citizen of Oklahoma who remains silent about the pending execution of Julius Jones is complicit in murdering him.

An unjust killing is murder. Executing a likely innocent person is an unjust killing, and thus is murder. Murder is immoral. Murder is evil. The unjust killing of Jesus was murder. The unjust killing of Julius Jones will be murder. You shall not murder!*

* I am relieved to report that Julius Jones will not be executed. His sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This means he will never be executed in relation to this sentence, and work can at least continue to determine his possible innocence.

  1. I would further argue that the execution of a guilty person is murder. In 2000, I gave the clemency appeal for Wanda Jean Allen, the first woman murdered by the state of Oklahoma. She was guilty of her crimes, but the impossible logic of killing someone for killing someone proves that the real impetus for capital punishment is vengeance not justice. In fact, those who call themselves Christians are often the most vociferous proponents of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” (a notoriously misunderstood teaching that sought to limit retribution, not provide a pretext for state-sponsored murder). When the state sets a date for an execution, it is premeditated. When they cause death by lethal injection, they commit the crime of murder. So it is no wonder that on the death certificate of an executed person, the cause of death is give as first-degree murder. That means that that state of Oklahoma should be put on trial for murder, and all of the citizens of Oklahoma should be considered accessories to the crime.

  2. Update: Julius Jones will not be be executed. His sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This means he will never be executed in relation to this sentence, and work can at least continue to determine his possible innocence.
