I have seen persons who are opposed to the fascism that has overtaken the United States government who say they were not participating in the February 28 economic blackout because they did not think it would make a difference. Here are a few thoughts:
- The Economic Blackout made less of a difference if you did not participate in it.
- All economic boycotts are a collective effort, and the aggregate of all the individual efforts can make a statement that any one individual cannot.
- Fascism is never defeated without sacrifice.
- No one was asking anyone to not buy essential items like medicine or food.
- If nothing else, use economic blackout days to only support locally owned businesses (a practice that is good for every day).
- Look at the economic blackout days as an opportunity to practice the discipline of sacrifice to be in solidarity with the most vulnerable in our society.
- The sacrifice that will be required to remove fascism from our government will be much more than one-day economic boycotts. Use such days as a way to prepare yourself for the much greater sacrifice that will be required of all of us if we are to preserve what little is left of our democracy.
- National strikes are coming, and if we can’t boycott the oligarchs for just one day, we will never find the resolve for what will be necessary in the coming weeks, months, and years.
The next National Economic Blackout is planned for March 28. I urge all who are working to resist fascism in the United States to participate.
