An Open Letter to Twitter’s Most Followed User

Source: Wikipedia

Dear President Obama,

With your 133 million followers, no one on earth has more followers on Twitter than you. Since the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk, he has fired thousands of workers, reinstated persons who used the platform to incite a violent insurrection at our Capitol, and given amnesty to users who were suspended for harassment, hate speech, and spreading misinformation and disinformation. The data now clearly show that hate speech and harassment on Twitter are already significantly on the rise. This hate and the actions inspired by it spread beyond the confines of social media.

President Obama, when you use Twitter, your posts drive millions of people to the site and that means millions of ad impressions that translate into significant ad revenue for Twitter. Major advertisers are now leaving the site in order not to be associated with a site that is profiting from hate, harassment, misinformation, and disinformation. Many persons, including celebrities, are also leaving Twitter in order not to support the hate that is happening on the site and the real violence to which this leads in our communities that is so often directed to the most vulnerable among us.

President Obama, there is no person of greater influence than you on Twitter. I am respectfully requesting that you cease to support Twitter with your presence and participation. Your action would be an example and a model for other persons of influence to follow in order to bring the hate, harassment, misinformation, and disinformation that is being spread on Twitter to an end. I am writing to you with the audacity to hope that you will accept this responsibility to show that Twitter is not an acceptable site for persons who are working together to create the Beloved Community in our world.

Respectfully,
